Levonorgestrel (intrauterine delivery system)

How Levonorgestrel (intrauterine delivery system) works

Levonorgestrel (intrauterine delivery system) is an intrauterine system (IUS). It is placed inside the womb (uterus) where it slowly releases the hormone levonorgestrel. This hormone prevents the release of egg (ovulation) and affects sperm movement in the womb to prevent its union with the egg. It also changes the lining of the womb and renders it unsuitable for pregnancy.
